<p>Biotechnology is an often used term when dealing with biology and medicine, however most people wonder “what is biotechnology”, so let’s look at the most basic explanation. By definition, biotechnology refers to the field or using of biological substances, or microorganisms to carry out concise industrial or manufacturing processes.  This area of biology uses living things in technology engineering medicine, and other aspects.  Its basis is derived mainly from biological sciences including microbiology and embryology, however, it also entails methods from other outside areas. For instance,  it involves a dependency on such fields as information technology and chemical engineering.<br />
Biotechnology may seem like something conducted strictly in a laboratory behind closed doors that we have no idea of, but it can be simplified into things we use in everyday life. For instance the way cheese is manufactured how beer and wine need to be fermented, these processes use microorganisms to be completed. Therefore this process falls under the category of biotechnology. Basically any approach taken to modify the products of living organisms in order to improve animals, plants or to create useful microorganisms is also known to be biotechnology. One of the most recent fields of biotechnology that has enhanced the things we eat and the way we live is genetic engineering. It is probably one of the most heard terms by the general public as to what goes on in biotech laboratories. The altering of genes to create a specific organism or living things was something perhaps thought of as once impossible, is now a very common practice. In addition to this, biotechnology has come a long way to develop better vaccines to protect humans and animals alike from diseases and plagues. Imagine a person that has a growth deficiency in height and size, not a person with dwarf syndrome , but just your everyday person. Over time they would develop health complications and have trouble completing certain activities and tasks, and  may not be accepted right away in their society. Well thanks to the advancement over the last few decades in the use of Human Growth Hormone that is administered to such patients, people can overcome such deficiencies and live normal lives. As you can see biotechnology is a huge part of everyday life and the improvement of it, and quite essential to our needs. This is a field of biology that plays a key role in the life of human and animals.</p>

<p>Have you ever heard about a biotechnology job? Do you often picture a scientist with smoky test tubes, or a guy in a white lab coat and goggles? This can be true, but there is a much broader availability of biotechnology jobs in the field that are nothing like this. Sure there are the laboratory jobs for coming up with new ideas for medicines that will better life and the world, but there is much more to consider than that.<br />
There are countless companies in today’s world that are affiliated with biotechnology, which means they have a ton of positions to fill. Biotechnology jobs can range from the scientists to the labs along with their assistants, to the security officer  in the front of the building observing who enters the facility. Of course this is debatable whether or not these are “biotechnology jobs” but these companies have many positions to fill. For example a large biotechnology needs to hire the obvious people in a laboratory, so let’s look at those jobs first. These people can be research scientists (Life Sciences/Medical), scientists  for industrial research and product development, forensic scientists, laboratory technicians, scientific journalists, and research scientists for agriculture/horticulture/food. These are perhaps the main positions available for a company but then we have to look at the bigger picture, if this company has a product, how does the company get out there? This is where we look at other biotechnology jobs, such as in sales, marketing, and packaging departments of these companies. Let’s face it, the bigger the company, the more positions there are to fill. Each department must run effectively and securely to ensure the proper distribution and sale of the product. Now aside from looking at the production aspect of this, let’s take forensic scientists for instance, they could be working for a crime lab. This would mean necessarily they could be working in the criminal justice field and not in a manufacturing lab. There are many possibilities for biotechnology jobs, but we still haven’t discussed the most important ones. The most important biotechnology jobs of all, are teacher, lecturers, and tutors in the educational institutions across the world. These are the people that introduce you to the world of biotechnology firsthand, and educate you into your career field after giving you a general understanding of the subject.  Some areas where people can find these jobs are in pharmaceutical companies, biotechnology companies, federal/state/local government, universities, research facilities, law enforcement agencies, and many more. So as you can see there are many possibilities for those looking to break into the field and land  a biotechnology job. There are many fields where one can apply themselves and be a small but important, or large and equally important, part of biotechnology and how it improves the quality of life.</p>

<p>Biotech pertains to any type of technology that utilizes biology to complete its task. It is commonly used to describe a higher level of technological intervention, specifically (but not always) in agriculture. Biotech is divided into four central subcategories which are labeled by colors. They are Red, Blue, White and Green.<br />
The Red field of biotech is used to describe the medical field, while Blue pertains to aquatic uses of biological technology. The Green field deals with plants and growing, and finally the White (sometimes referred to as grey) one refers to the industry field.<br />
The Red area of biotech is the part used to create new medicines to aid the body in fighting illnesses and disease, mainly using bacteria to produce drugs. Some new methods exist altering certain cells in the human body to cure a disease as well. The Green field of biotech which is the most broadly known and used field, is the longest existing use of biotechnology by human beings.  This field pertains to dealings with plants such as altering their genetic makeup to reject certain chemicals or pests in the case of crops, or even selective breeding.  The Blue area of biotech is generally more new and very rarely used. Today, the research and development branch of biotech has evolved into  a very large and important part of our lives. Researchers are now able to combine DNA from different life forms, and be able to appoint which set of sequences in the DNA are responsible for specific genetic traits. This goes for both the bad and the good traits. This allows the technicians to be able to enhance and promote desirable traits in DNA and discard the unwanted ones, and be able to transport the traits among life forms.<br />
Over the last few decades biotech research centers have increased drastically in existence. In the beginning there were only research centers within government facilities due to funding, but with the growing interest in biotech and in the betterment of the quality of life, they have expanded. Universities all over the world have added private biotech research centers, private investors have also designed their own and constructed them. The numbers of people in the field have grown so much, and rightfully so, the field itself has grown in its efforts as well. <p>Biotech companies have beyond tripled in the past few decades. The demand for research and development of new medicines and techniques in this field of biology is the primary cause. Private investors from all over the world have put money into these multimillion dollar companies as an investment in stock that continues to grow. The number of biotech companies has increased greatly in the United States as well as surprisingly India. Some other smaller nations such as Switzerland, have a good number but can’t compete with the advancement of U.S. These companies are expanding their research center and staff because of new developments and the need for more workers to run such giant companies.<br />
Such developments and advancements in the field have led to the growth of their stock value. These values have climbed exponentially causing a growth in the number of people purchasing stock in biotech left and right. Who would’ve thought that this was the field to put your money into to watch it grow drastically, twenty years ago?  Some of the world’s largest biotech companies include Amgen, Calgene, CSL, Genzyme, Actelion, PDL BioPharma, Serono, Biogen Idec, Gilead Services, and Cephalon. If the advancement of biology in technology continues on its path who knows how many more companies we will see emerge in the next decade. Perhaps we will be able to see countless biotech companies in every state, and eventually one in every region of the state. The demand for these research centers is growing, and the space needed is there. It’s only a matter of time before investors and institutions purchase more land and property in which to set these companies up. This may not be necessarily a bad thing because with the recession today, thousands of more available jobs couldn’t possibly be a bad thing. The products that are coming out of these facilities, and the medicines created are helping better the way of human life, so on top it definitely seems like a beneficial outcome for all. Some people may argue that these giants are taking over their state, city , or town, but who is to argue when these jobs are necessary and the product of these companies is beneficiary to theirs and everyone’s health.  These companies also balance out our stocks because once they build up to where they want to be, sometimes they sell to larger pharmaceutical companies at high prices. The people that were hurt most during this recession was New York’s Wall Street stock market workers. Perhaps with the recent selling and buying of biotech companies in the last month, the stocks will rise and some people that were previously laid off can come back to their jobs. Biotech companies are a great part of the economy and a great part of our improvement of our way of life, with their developments we will see their growth’s positive impact on our world. We hope to see a continued growth pattern in them, as well as in their research.</p>

<p>We all know that biology is the study of life and its living organisms, which includes their function, growth, structure, evolution, origin, distribution, and taxonomy. We also know that biology is a natural science, one that is essential to our existence and to our understanding of ourselves as organisms and the organisms around us. In our basic understanding we learned in school that the fundamental statements of biology state the following: new species and their inherited traits are the product of evolution, that genes are the basic unit of heredity, that an organism will regulate its internal environment to maintain a stable and constant condition, that cells are the basic unit of life, and that living organisms consume and transform energy. Biology has been around since 1800 when the term was first coined in its modern sense, but has continued to evolve ever since. It developed not only in its own sense but also into other subcategories and fields. One such field is molecular biology.<br />
Molecular biology is a branch or field of biology that looks at the molecular makeup of life, or basically the study of biology on a molecular level.  The phrase molecular biology was first used in the late 1930s, although the branch of biology was said to have been discovered some years earlier to that. There has been colossal growth in this field since its birth and continued growth today. It provides scientists with the ability to view the human body a lot closer than they had originally before and to gain a better understanding of it. In turn, knowing how the body works, we know how to treat it when it has a break down and we can fix it right away rather than study the problem and let it worsen. During the sixties,  molecular biology was responsible for noting the structure of DNA.  Later, it proved to find some significant advances in the world of genetics and biochemistry. The most common area of molecular biology that is discussed today is of course cloning. With  expression cloning scientists were able to attach specific coding of DNA into different animals and plants to transfer the components of that DNA. This has opened up new doors for scientists in the field, as to what can be achieved by such a task. The study of DNA has increased vastly and new discoveries have been made about the genetic makeup of animals and humans alike. With this knowledge scientists can not only learn new things about our bodies and makeup but also approach things differently and perhaps complete tasks they weren’t able to before. Molecular biology has really taken off over the last half of century and will make a deep impact on our future. Who knows if with time we will be able to do the impossible and clone a human, an idea that seemed light years away in the impossible just 20 years ago. Molecular biology has come along way as a field of biology and has made a large enough impact to become one of its main fields, the developments that will come out of it will continue to show on a large scale.</p>

These positions are available through state and federal governments as well as private environmental companies also. If you’re interested in the study of microorganisms and would like a job as a researcher, or research assistant in the field then you would look into the field of Microbiology. But let’s not look into every single field, here since there are many more, let’s focus on the biology job that would fit you. First a person must decide where there interest is based, to determine the correct field biology where they can apply themselves. Once they have determined this, they can look into the different types of people needed in the study or improvement of the science. They can research a list of biology jobs on different databases that focuses on their subcategory and approach it from there. Most biology jobs pay rather well, so the hard work spent studying and learning about your specific area of study will pay off. Plus if biology is something you love, the knowledge will prove rewarding on its own. The demand for biology jobs has increased greatly in the past years because of the advancement of a large number of sub fields of biology. Some of these fields demand large research centers, or companies which need to be fully staffed. This means that when a new one opens up in your area, there will be an abundance of biology jobs available to all that qualify. <p>The world of science has incorporated itself more and more into our everyday culture, and become a norm in information. Years ago science news was delivered sparsely and perhaps about some enormous breakthrough in a new technology or discovery. Today, science is intricately involved in our everyday tasks that everyday we can find an article in regards to something in the science world. With new products, vaccines, weather changes, animals that are evolving, general discoveries, etc.. there is tons of science news that needs to be distributed to the general public.</p>
<p>This week alone there have been hundreds of  science articles all over the world about such topics, some even making international headlines. For instance, in science news earlier this week,  the world was informed that an entire island has disappeared off the cost of India and Bangladesh. This island, known as New Moore island, was claimed by both nations for three decades and now it seems the battle is over. The changing planet and rising waters completely submerged the island, and scientists are now trying to investigate the ocean rising patterns to figure out why such an occurrence came to be. This is an example of something that has to do with our planet and climate change, but it’s not the only type of science news that is available on a global scale. In other news in the science field, there is an article out that relates to humankind and how us as humans have evolved. Scientists have studied DNA that was discovered in Siberia and decoded its genetic material to determine that we may have another ‘ancestor’ or descendant in the human tree that was not in it before. Discoveries like this change the perspective of science in the study of people and how we’ve evolved from Neanderthals and may piece together a new puzzle as to a different species we once were not aware of. However, before all this can be determined much more scientific research will have to be conducted to determine what if any claim can be made. Then there is also a science article in regards to the decreasing number of honeybees, and how now with such a bad winter in the U.S. they may be in more trouble than ever. However, not all science news has to pertain to the planet, humans, and animals or insects, other articles refer to advancement in science or new findings. For example, we’re no strangers to hand sanitizers and how they have helped prevent disease, and been there for hygiene when one couldn’t get to a sink or soap. So since we know it’s another effective of germ fighting that can help prevent disease, what else needs to be said? New studies show that these hand sanitizers, specifically the ones containing ethanol, are much more efficient at ridding rhinovirus from people’s hands over washing them with traditional soap and water. This type of science news,  is a discovery that would provide information that can change a daily activity we take part in, to improve the quality of life. Science affects us all in many ways and from various fields, we need to pay closer attention to science news more closely because we may learn something new. This may be something new in regards to products made available for different purposes, the reason why your favorite vacation spots may be warmer than usual, or why you may see a certain animal or insect less frequently. Science is the basis of our knowledge for our planet and all its inhabitants, so in essence, we should probably be a little bit more aware of science news to learn more about ourselves and our planet.</p>
